From the Bait BucketFish Tales from River Dunes' own Andrew Baysden Late summer and early fall are prime time for hooking the Big Drum. These "monsters" can be found in the waters surrounding River Dunes, and they make for a great evening's entertainment. The weather in Eastern NC has finally tempered a bit which means the inshore trout fishing around River Dunes will ignite like a firecracker over the next several months. Lower water temperatures will push the schooling baitfish that have served as delectable buffet items for trout, puppy drum, and flounder, out into deeper water, causing man’s artificial lures and grubs to resemble filet mignon to cruising predators. Speckled Trout are especially good eating when tossed into a pan of sizzling grease. They can, however, be a bit elusive to catch. Anglers should look for inshore ledges where the water depth drops sharply from 3 to 7 feet. I'll share a tip for those looking to catch a speckled trout who may not have access to a boat or may not be familiar with the waters surrounding River Dunes - fish the channel wall in our marina at sunup or sundown and you could be in for a special treat!
