Leukemia Cup Regatta Kicks Off in Grand Style
A kick-off for the second annual Leukemia Cup Regatta was held at River Dunes on March 17. Over 40 pre-registered captains and guests attended the Harbor Club event, along with representatives of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of NC and featured speaker, Gary Jobson.
Jobson is a three time All American sailor and 1977 America’s Cup winner, who sailed with media mogul and philanthropist Ted Turner on Courageous. He is the sailing commentator for ESPN and provides coverage of Olympic sailing events for NBC. He is the current president of US Sailing, editor at large for Sailing World magazine and has authored 17 books. A blood cancer survivor, Jobson has been national chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta since 1994.
Jobson recounted some of his most recent sailing adventures, including a trip to Antarctica and videos of the 2008 Olympics in China. He also described his Fantasy Sail in New York Harbor, shared with 2011 Leukemia Cup Regatta captains from across the US who reached a milestone in fund-raising. Bill Scott of Burlington and River Dunes, NC was the top fund-raiser in the 2011 Regatta at River Dunes and a participant in this year’s Fantasy Sail with Jobson.
Ed Mitchell, president of River Dunes, noted that “we are looking forward to welcoming the regatta back with even more participants this year. 2011 was a great start and we hope to exceed our record-setting first year with more boats and more money raised for a great cause.”
Information and registration for the 2012 Regatta, set for June 9 and 10 at River Dunes is available at The Leukemia Cup Regatta.
