Photos from Coastal Heritage Day
River Dunes and seventeen participants headed across the ferry last Saturday. Temps in the upper 60's and sunny skies made for a beautiful day! The Boat Barn on the Beaufort waterfront is part of the Maritime Museum.
After a tour of the barn and museum, with an emphasis on historic boat-building traditions in our area, our guide (& boat restorer) took us to the Maritime Museum's private collection of antique and partially restored boats that aren't on display.
After a delicious lunch at the Beaufort Grocery and to-die-for desserts, some folks stayed in Beaufort to see the sights, while others headed down the road to Harkers Island. At the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, we met the boatbuilder that restored the "Jean Dale"- a core-sounder and sister ship to River Dunes' Miss Grace. Landon, his grandson, is learning early and built these models of the boat.
Inside the Museum, we got an introduction to the Downeast Communities, decoys, coastal fishing, and the history of the museum. Then, we headed over to the Cape Lookout National Seashore for a video on the ever-changing Outer Banks, narrated by Meryl Streep.
For dinner, everyone headed back to the Harbor Club, enjoyed dinner from the menu with Chef Robert. Our evening speaker, Ben Casey recounted the adventures of photographing the Neuse for his book "All in One River".
Steve Ura graciously took photos after Kari's camera battery died! Thanks Steve! To see the full photo album, head to: the complete album.
